To Keto or Not to Keto….

Everyone who knows me knows I’m not a fan of fad diets—of any kind. They come and they go. But every now and then one comes along that catches my eye. It’s not to say I’m in on it but it makes me curious to see what the fuss is all about. And, the Keto diet is one that is making a huge splash these days.

So the question here is to Keto or not to Keto? A few of my patients caught the Keto wagon so I decided it was time to explore this new wave of eating.

I, at first, thought it was the Atkins diet, which on close look it seems so but it’s not. Atkins promotes high protein, moderate fat and veggies and low carbs where Ketogenics seems to promote high fat, low protein and veggies and none to little starchy carbs, dairy and fruit.

And then I stumbled upon The Keto Diet, which is an offshoot of Ketogenics by Leanne Vogel but with a twist focusing more on balance and high quality fats. The Keto Diet promotes unprocessed, high quality fats, moderate protein and veggies and low carbs. Hmmm.

I have a history of binge eating, food addiction and bulimia through exercise, both of which I’ve been in recovery for the last 20 years. One of the ways I was able to tame the binge giant was to eat a no sugar, high protein and veggie diet with moderate starchy carbs, fats, dairy and fruits. And it worked for me…and thousands and thousands of people I know who struggled with addictive eating.

I’ve seen so many miraculous changes in patients, myself, and people I know, that I’ve written books on the subject to share with the world.

So to think maybe there could be another way peeked my interest. In my research I found that The Keto Diet, by Leanne Vogel and Ketogenics, which seems similar to me, both promote high fat eating. Both of which tout the same good news I scream from the top of the hill but with a different food structure. How could this be? Could I be wrong? Are they wrong:? Are we both right?

Perhaps we are both right.

The red flag I have with Ketogenics is promoting fast weight loss and high fat consumption with little room for carbs such as fruits and starchy carbohydrates. The Keto Diet, by Leanne Vogel  promotes healthy eating from a nutritionists view with the focus on eating for nourishment and optimal health though weight loss is a likely outcome.

Though the The Keto Diet and ketogenic diet seem to me almost interchangeable, Leanne’s version appears more interested in balanced eating and listening to what the body needs. Both plans work towards ketosis, centering on fat, which supplies as much as 90% of daily calories. Yikes!!!

The Keto Diet, with Leanne Vogel, stems from a nutritionist’s view similar to what I promote for the food addict sans the copious amount of fat. The up to 90% of fat is a frightening thought. I have this visual of bacon, butter, and cream and loads of avocado.

It is my understanding the idea of the ketogenic diet is to get into ketosis, which is when your body uses fat instead of carbohydrates for energy. In the state of ketosis the fat travels to the liver and make byproducts called ketones; these enter your bloodstream, and are converted into energy.

Healthy Lifestyle

I promote healthy lifestyle through spiritual food, nutritious food, and moderate exercise—a body, mind, spiritual view. I’m not sure one can reach a balance missing one of the three…sort of like trying to balance a four prong stool with only three legs…wobbly at best.

My patients  engaged in Ketogenics are losing weight—and fast. Those eating on the Keto diet, based on Leanne Vogel’s book, seem to release weight steadily but not as rapid as she is focused on nutrition and balance, filling in with periodic carb-ups and intermittent fasts, where those strictly following Ketogenics are more about quick weight loss, intermittent fasts, and rejuvenating with fat-boms when needing energy.

It’s reported there are bouts of low energy known as the Keto-flue, extreme hunger, and binge eating while following either Keto plan.

Those who eat balanced, as I do, with a measured amount of protein at each feeding coupled with  a limited amount fruit, grains, unprocessed starchy carbs, fats, and dairy, grew into their right-sized body slow and steadily—and permanently.  Well…there you have it…

So is the answer to Keto or is it not to Keto? I think it’s up to you.

I’m starting my day with homemade raspberry muffins made with yellow corn grits, eggs, fresh raspberries, cinnamon and dark cocoa with a dollop of Greek yogurt. Oh yea!
